After a long 24-hour of travel, the FACES Foundation Surgical Team arrived in Lambayeque, Peru, yesterday morning (January 26th). The Lambayeque Lions Club met the team at the airport, where they helped shuttle the hundreds of pounds of medical bags. Saturday afternoon the team spent setting up the hospital and getting ready for surgeries, which started today. Belen Hospital has again so graciously given the FACES team the use of three out of four of their operating rooms. All elective surgeries at Belen Hospital have been cancelled for this cleft campaign.
Before the sun rose, the team was awake on Sunday, fueling with coffee and prepping for the long day ahead. Patients arrived at the hospital at 7am, and the first cleft lip and palate cases were in the operating rooms shortly after 8 am.
This first day has been fabulous and, for a first day, has gone very smoothly. We have an incredible team of medical and support staff this year, each one brining their particular strength to the group. Six cleft lip and palate surgeries were completed today, and all patients are in the recovery rooms now, healing very well.
