Dr. Thomas Albert, President, Co-Founder

Dr. Tom Albert is a professor at Oregon Health Sciences University in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Albert was involved in an extensive medical education effort concerning cleft care with Project Hope in China from 1983-1993 and has continued to be involved independently since then. His interest has been to develop ways to extend truly comprehensive cleft care beyond surgery alone to difficult to reach populations. He is President and Co-Founder of FACES Foundation. He has led 12 medical mission trips to Peru and visits at least twice a year.

Kelly Jensen, Board Chair

Kelly Jensen is a business leader and management consultant with over 30 years’ experience introducing new technologies and management practices in the United States and Latin America. Specializing in healthcare, Mr. Jensen has worked with over 300 hospitals and health systems to improve their performance. In his role as Managing Director for FACES, he builds relationships in Peru with essential partners for the cleft campaigns including the medical community and the Lions Clubs. In addition to supporting FACES, Mr. Jensen provides leadership in faith-based organizations and alumni associations of Harvard University. He is fluent in English and Spanish, and conversant in German and Tzotzil Maya.

Delia Delgado Peruvian Coordinator

Delia Delgado Maldonado is an accomplished English teacher in Chiclayo, Peru and studied languages in university. She enjoys meeting new people and visiting new places and, when not working, her favorite free-time activity is walking. Delia loves her work with FACES because she is in direct contact with people, which she says is always a learning experience. She finds great satisfaction in seeing people’s health and lives improve.

Angela Jensen, Program Director

Angela has served as the foundation’s director since August 2014. She manages patient health records, team travel logistics, and the social media and fundraising branches of FACES. Her experiences living abroad in Argentina, Switzerland and France have prepared her for a lifetime of international involvement. Angela is also a certified Spanish-English medical interpreter. This will be her 6th surgical campaign with FACES Foundation.


Surgeons

Dr. Dana Smith, Surgical Team Lead

Dr. Smith is a Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon who is currently Director of the Kaiser Permanente Northwest Cleft Palate Clinic in Portland, OR. He is an Otolaryngologist at Kaiser and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at OHSU. Dr. Smith has been to Peru several times for cleft surgery trips, cleft screening trips and international medical conferences. He has also traveled to Russia for a facial reconstructive surgery trip. Dr. Smith has been our lead surgeon for several years: he is a true asset to the FACES Foundation.

Dr. Lisa Morris

Dr. Morris is a Craniofacial Surgeon who went to OHSU for Ear, Nose and Throat residency and then did 2 years of fellowship training in New York and Salt Lake City.  She is currently working with the Craniofacial Foundation of Utah in Salt Lake City as a craniofacial and facial plastic surgeon. This will be Dr. Morris’ 6th surgical trip to Peru with FACES and she is looking forward to working with such an energetic, caring and phenomenal group of people.




Dr. Myriam Loyo

Dr. Loyo is an assistant professor at Oregon Health and Science University and a surgeon in the Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery division. She completed her medical education in Monterrey, Mexico and continued her specialization at Johns Hopkins Hospital and OHSU. We are thrilled that she is joining the team in Peru for the surgical campaign. This will be her fifth surgical trip with the FACES Foundation.



Dr. Jessyka Lighthall

Dr. Lighthall is an Assistant Professor in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery and the Director of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA.  Her practice spans both cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgery including treatment of congenital anomalies (e.g. cleft repair, microtia reconstruction), pediatric and adult facial trauma, care for patients with facial paralysis, cancer reconstruction, nose surgery, and cosmetic facial surgery.  This will be her fourth trip with the FACES team.  She is excited to again join the FACES Team to provide high quality cleft care to patients in Peru.


Dr. Allison Dobbie

Dr. Dobbie is a pediatric otolaryngologist who is joining the FACES team from Children’s Hospital Colorado. She began her medical schooling at Wayne State University in Michigan, pursued a residency at UC-Davis, and completed a fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. This will be her first surgical campaign with the FACES Foundation.



Dr. Will Dougherty

Dr. Dougherty grew up in Lexington, Kentucky and attended the University of Virginia where he obtained a BA in Economics. He returned home for medical school at the University of Kentucky. Following this, he matched at UVA for his Otolaryngology residency. While a resident at UVA he had extensive experience with cleft lip and palate care and travelled to Kenya in 2017 with a cleft surgical team. This year, he is completing a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This will be his 1st trip with the FACES campaign. 


Dr. Christopher Hargunani

Dr. Hargunani is currently completing fellowship training in pediatric otolaryngology at Oregon Health and Science University.  Prior to this, he had been practicing general otolaryngology in Portland, Oregon since 2006.  He has always had a strong interest in serving children with craniofacial disorders and underserved populations, and he looks forward to combining these interests with FACES.




Dr. Tyler Weaver

Dr. Weaver is a surgical resident in the otolaryngology department at Oregon Health and Science University. He completed his undergraduate degree in Applied Health at Azusa Pacific University.  Dr. Weaver has done numerous mission trips to many areas overseas, such as Mexico, Jamaica, Haiti, and India.  This will be his first trip to Peru with FACES, and we are looking forward to having him on the team!


Anesthesiologists

Dr. Berklee Robins, MD, MA

Berklee is a board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist and an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital/OHSU. He completed his anesthesia residency at Stanford in 1993, and his pediatric anesthesia fellowship at the Boston Children’s Hospital in 1994. Originally from NY, he has been living in Portland for the past 23 years. This will be his 12th medical mission. His academic interests include global health and global anesthesia issues and resident education. He is also interested in Bioethics, and serves on the Ethics Consult Service at OHSU.  Berklee has been instrumental in organizing the 2019 Anesthesia Team and is a true leader for FACES. This will be his fourth trip to Peru with the FACES Foundation.

Chris Baylis, CNRA

Chris Baylis is a certified nurse anesthetist at Northwest Permanente. He brings with him the experience of tending to patients of all ages in all types of surgery and has practiced in 4 states. This will be Chris’ fourth year as a member of the FACES Surgical Team. He has been an integral member of the supply acquisition team. His leadership and organization have been immensely helpful in preparing for this upcoming campaign.

Dr. Stephen Knox

Dr. Knox has been an anesthesiologist for more than 20 years and currently works at Kaiser Permanente. Prior to life as an anesthesiologist, Dr. Knox was a physical therapist.  He is married to another Kaiser Permanente physician and together they have three teenagers. This will be his second campaign with the FACES Foundation, and we are thrilled to have him back!



Dr. Philip Yun

Dr. Yun is an anesthesiologist at Oregon Health and Science University. During his fellowship at OHSU, he joined the FACES Team for a surgical campaign in 2017. We are so excited that he will be joining us again in Lambayeque!





Dr. Justin Ramos

Dr. Ramos is an anesthesiologist at Legacy Emanuel and Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland. He joined the FACES Team in 2017 and 2018 and has been a bright spot with both team members and patients. In college, Justin lived for two months in Madrid as part of a study abroad program.  We are excited for his return to the FACES team this year.




Dr. Julia Stokes

Dr. Stokes is a Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellow at OHSU.  She has two young children of her own and a passion for caring for pediatric patients.  She has previously volunteered her time at a hospital in India during her undergraduate education and looks forward to  joining the FACES team in Peru this year!






Dr. Rachel Wood

Dr. Wood grew up in Davis, CA and moved to Portland after earning an undergraduate degree in English Literature.  After a few years (and a bit of a windy road) she ultimately attended medical school at OHSU and developed an interest in anesthesiology. She is excited to have returned to OHSU this year for a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship following her residency in Madison, WI.  We are looking forward to having her join the FACES team!



Dr. Melissa Knight

Dr. Knight is currently an anesthesiology resident at OHSU. During her undergraduate studies at Stanford University she won four national championships as part of the varsity synchronized swimming team. She completed her medical degree at the University of Michigan, during which she did research in Eastern Uganda and participated in a medical mission in Iquitos, Peru. She is an avid traveler, and hopes to make global health a central part of her career.



H. Cameron Norris

Cameron is a fourth-year medical student at Oregon Health & Science University going into anesthesiology. As a seventeen year old, he read a book about the humanitarian efforts of Dr. Paul Farmer which inspired him to pursue a career in medicine and global health. He is this year’s recipient of OHSU’s Global Anesthesia Medical Student Fellowship, and he is thrilled to be joining the team in Peru! 



Operating Room Nurses

Sarah Lazarides

Sarah has been in the OR since she was 19 years old. She has a broad skill set with the ability to scrub and circulate all types of surgical cases. Sarah is currently the Peri-operative Nurse Manager at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center. This is Sarah’s second campaign with the FACES Foundation, and we feel honored that she is able to lead our OR team this January.

James Lazarides

James has been an OR nurse for over 26 years, and is currently the general surgery charge nurse at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center. James has an broad knowledge of both scrub and circulating roles. This will be his second medical mission with FACES, and we feel lucky to have him on our team!






Catherine Parkinson

Catherine has been an RN for over 10 years and has worked with a variety of different patient populations. Passionate about different cultures, Catherine majored in Cultural Anthropology prior to nursing school. She currently works as an OR nurse at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. This will be her second medical mission with FACES. Welcome back, Catherine!





Gary Jones

Gary is joining the FACES Foundation for the first time this year, but has been on multiple international medical trips with other groups. He brings 5 years of experience working in the pediatric OR at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT. He now works as a Nurse Practitioner with the inpatient General Surgery team, but still enjoys international medical trips working in the OR. Welcome to the team, Gary!

 

 
Alisa Valles

Alisa has been a nurse for almost 7 years. Her background consists of correctional, critical care, PACU, and most recently the operating room for arenas of nursing.  This is her first mission with FACES and she is thrilled for all that this opportunity encompasses!





Shannon Blough

Shannon has been a Medical Assistant for 9 years and currently works in Portland at Kaiser Interstate. She assists with surgical procedures and plastic surgery repairs in the Mohs Department. She is also an accomplished photographer and has volunteered at FACES’ events in the past. This will be her first medical mission with FACES, and we are happy to have her!





Pre / Post-Op Nurses

Tammy Berks

Tammy has been a nurse with Kaiser for over 25 years working in pediatrics and day surgery. She has been involved with fundraising efforts for FACES and this will be her 11th mission trip with FACES! Tammy has formed ongoing friendships with both staff and patients in Peru, and we feel lucky to have her with us this year!





Morgan Luke

Morgan is also a PACU (post-anesthesia-care-unit) nurse at Kaiser Permanente. Since 2008, she has practiced as an RN at Kaiser, where her skills have been cultivated and fine-tuned, and her kindness has touched the lives of many people. She stays involved with FACES year-round as a fundraiser and a friend-raiser. This will be Morgan’s fourth medical mission with the FACES Foundation.




Beth deLaney

Beth has been a member of the FACES team for the past 6 years. She is a recently retired PACU RN. Now, managing a family-owned restaurant in Arroyo Grande, California, she spends her free time hiking, practicing yoga and trying her best to learn Spanish.





Heather Foster

Heather is an incredible source of skill, experience, and kindness. She retired this year after 40 years of nursing at Kaiser Permamente. She has volunteered in a number of capacities on over 15 medical mission trips. This will be her fourth year with the FACES Foundation, and we are so grateful to have her (and her Spanish skills) on the team!

Valerie Gardner

Valerie is a native of Portland, Oregon. She recently moved to Salt Lake City and currently works at Primary Children’s Hospital in the Float Pool, primarily our ICU and oncology unit. She joined the FACES 2018 Surgical Campaign, and was a wonderful addition. Her fluent Spanish was incredibly helpful! Welcome back, Val!

Michelle Lesman

Michelle’s nursing career has been focused on pediatrics for 10 years. Her skills and outlook have been shaped by her time at Emanuel Children’s Hospital/Randall Children’s Hospital and at Kaiser ASC, focusing on family centered care. She serves on the committee of the Pediatric Care Team – a Kaiser team of health professionals with the goal of improving safe, family-centered care for Oregon’s pediatric population. This will be her second trip with the FACES Foundation, and we are thrilled to have her back!




Speech Therapists

Hannah Sanford-Keller

Hannah Sanford-Keller, MS, CCC-SLP is an Assistant Professor and Speech-Language Pathologist at the Institute on Development and Disability at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. Hannah works in the Cleft Palate/Craniofacial Disorders Program at the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center providing parent coaching, assessment, and intervention services to support the communication skills of children with craniofacial differences. This will be her third campaign with the FACES Foundation. 


Ashley Northam

Ashley Northam, MS, CCC-SLP is the Director of the Speech Language Pathology Assistant Program at Chemeketa Community College. She has been involved on a state and national level in shaping the role of Speech-Language Pathology Assistants ( SLPAs) for the past 18 years. Ashley received her master’s degree from Portland State University and has worked in the area in schools, private practice and clinic settings with children and adults with Communication Disorders. Ashley is invested in shaping a continuum of family and clinician treatment and education for children with cleft lip and palate.


Interpreters

Delia Trimble

Delia recently graduated from Temple University with a major in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. Since graduating, she has been working in Philadelphia as a Physician Care Assistant at an Otolaryngology practice and working hard to complete applications to nursing programs. She has dedicated time to volunteer in many marginalized Latino communities, particularly in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. In the future, she hopes to have opportunities through nursing to enhance the lives of marginalized community members throughout the world. 



Elsa Colleran

Elsa is a medical assistant at Oregon Health and Science University. Since 2018, she has been helping us launch the new Electronic Health System for our patients, and has been very helpful in preparing the data for our upcoming surgical trip. Elsa has been familiar with the FACES Foundation for years, and she is excited to join us in Peru for her first Surgical Campaign. Elsa, we’re excited too!

Kristopher Luke

Kristopher’s educational background includes studies in business, communication, and cardiac sonography. He holds a bachelor of Echocardiography degree from Oregon Tech and is currently employed at the Portland VA Medical Center as an Echocardiographer. This will be his third year with FACES and we are grateful for his willingness to serve as our patient photographer.






Student Support

Sterling Berks

Sterling has worked in health care since graduating high school and enjoys working with patients. He is preparing for nursing school, and has just one more prerequisite remaining!  This will be his first year serving with the FACES Team, though he is familiar with the program since his mother Tammy has been involved for 10 years. He is “excited to get to work and bring joy to those we get to serve.”




Karter Cook-Lazarides

Karter is a junior at La Salle College Preparatory. He is a competitive soccer player with aspirations to play in college. He is currently enrolled in Spanish classes, and his goal for this trip is “to help and serve other while trying to enhance my Spanish skills.” Karter states he is grateful for this opportunity to serve and also to see his parents in their capacity as OR nurses.  





Alex Colleran

Alex is a student at Oregon Episcopal and has a strong interest in photography, website design and social media. In 2018, he participated in a mission trip to Guatemala where he and a team of parents and students helped with residential stove construction. This will be his first time to Peru, and we are excited to have him on the team!
