President and Co-Founder
Dr. Tom Albert is a professor at Oregon Health Sciences University in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well a Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery in Portland, Oregon. He received both his medical (MD) and dental (DMD) training at Harvard, completing his residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital before joining the faculty at OHSU. Dr. Albert was involved in an extensive medical education effort concerning cleft care with Project Hope in China from 1983-1993 and has continued to be involved independently since then. His interest has been to develop ways to extend truly comprehensive cleft care beyond surgery alone to difficult to reach populations.
Board Chair and VP International Relations
Kelly T. Jensen, MBA. Management Consultant in healthcare operations and information systems. AB and MBA, Harvard University. As a management consultant for 30+ years, Kelly assists organizations to improve strategy and operations. He brings to FACES business experience from Kaiser Permanente, Baxter Healthcare, PricewaterhouseCoopers, companies large and small, and state and federal agencies. Kelly also contributes volunteer experience from the Harvard Alumni Club of Oregon (past president), the Harvard Business School Association of Oregon (president), the Boy Scouts, youth sports, and church service. As a FACES board member, he guides long term planning, serves as an interpreter on surgical trips, and builds community relations in Peru and the U.S.
Dr. Sharon Higgins has served as President of Northwest Permanente, P.C., and Executive Medical Director of Kaiser Permanente Northwest. Prior to this, she served as Chief of Otolaryngology from 1987 to 1999, Vice President and Operations Medical Director for Specialty Care from 1999 to 2005, and most recently as Assistant Medical Director for Business Affairs.
Dr. Higgins is also a board member of Tucker Maxon Oral School, which provides oral education, teaching deaf children to speak integrated with hearing students, and the Foundation for Medical Excellence which promotes high quality care and sound health policy through sponsoring physician education and research of health care issues in the community.
Board Member and Surgical Lead
Dr. Dana Smith, MD. Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon who is currently Director of the Kaiser Cleft/Craniofacial Multidisciplinary Clinic in Portland. He has been actively involved in cleft surgery here and abroad for a number of years and currently directs the FACES Cleft Surgery Team for Peru. Dr. Smith is a superb surgeon and a dedicated team member. In 2015, he traveled to Peru upon invitation to present at an International Plastic Surgery Conference, where he gained the respect of his colleagues in Peru through excellent medical research presented in excellent Spanish.
Dr. Lourdes Quintanilla-Dieck began her medical education in In Monterrey, Mexico and continued her specialization at Mass Eye and Ear (Massachusettes), OHSU (Oregon) and Vanderbilt (Tennessee). She is a talented surgeon and a compassionate doctor. She has traveled to Peru with the surgical team and is excited to further develop FACES’ Speech Therapy program.
Anna Garwood collaborated with FACES Foundation while serving as the Latin America Program Manager of Green Empowerment. During that time, she was living in Peru to manage the implementation of clean water and renewable energy projects. She also worked closely with Soluciones Practicas and Cafe Femenino to build a new drinking water system in a remote community called San Antonio. Of her involvement, she states, “I met the FACES team and saw not only their dedication to making profound changes for individual children, but also their commitment to broader public health. I am excited to contribute my 15 years of non-profit management and program development to the FACES board and continue to stay connected to Peru.”
Nick Wobbrock has a background in engineering, sustainability and business with an emphasis in international development and technology. He works for Blue Forest Conservation, a startup dedicated to financial innovation to fund social and environmental problems. His prior work includes the Nature Conservancy, engineer consulting for Brown and Caldwell, and managing water and sanitation projects for the US Peace Corps and Doctors Without Borders. Nick also sits on the Board of the International Rural Water Association where he continues to support communities in Honduras from his days in the Peace Corps.
Leah Bachhuber is a long-time friend of FACES. Her background in community service and social outreach launched the foundation forward in her years as the Executive Director. Inspired by the work of the surgical team, Leah completed a nursing degree and currently works in Tualatin.
Dr. Mark Wax, MD. ENT Head & Neck Surgeon, OHSU. Dr Wax’s clinical interest is the reconstruction and rehabilitation of head and neck patients undergoing surgical procedures for head and neck oncology. He also specializes in treating snoring and sleep apnea.
Jesse Rader, RN, MPH. Jesse is a nurse at OHSU, although she is taking two years off to be in China with her husband and daughters. She is an enthusiastic supporter of FACES and instrumental in surgical supply acquisition, inventory and transport. She was in
the Peace Corps serving in Swaziland 1994-1996. Jesse’s connection with the Peruvian people is intimate: her mother is Peruvian, and Jesse has traveled to Peru on many occasions a part form her work with FACES. Even at a distance, Jesse is still a wonderful member of the team.
Coordinators and Directors
Angela David first volunteered with FACES as a medical interpreter in 2013. During college, she spent time in Latin America as an exchange student, where she grew to love the people and their culture. After getting involved in Healthcare as an interpreter, Angela was excited to join FACES, an organization so committed to bringing medical treatment to rural parts of Peru. Angela manages the electronic health record, the social outreach, and the fundraising of FACES, but her favorite role is still as an interpreter during the surgical trips.
Delia Delgado Maldonado is FACES’s Peru Patient Coordinator, working with all patients, families and partners on the ground in Peru. In addition to working with FACES, she is also an English teacher in Chiclayo, Peru, and studied languages at university. She enjoys meeting new people and visiting new places when she is not working. Delia loves her work with FACES because she is in direct contact with so many people, and she gains great satisfaction in helping to improve people’s lives.
