Board Members

President Emeritus and Co-Founder

 

Dr. Tom Albert is a professor at Oregon Health Sciences University in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well a Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery in Portland, Oregon. He was involved in an extensive medical education effort concerning cleft care with Project Hope in China from 1983-1993 and has continued to be involved independently since then. His interest has been to develop  ways to extend truly comprehensive cleft care beyond surgery alone to difficult to reach populations.

Board Chair and President

Business leader and management consultant with over 30 years’ experience introducing new technologies and management practices in the United States and Latin America. Mr. Jensen brings to FACES business experience from Kaiser Permanente, Baxter Healthcare, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, and state and federal agencies. As FACES Board Chair and managing director, he guides long term planning and builds partnerships in Peru and the U.S.

Board Treasurer

Dr. Sharon Higgins has served as President of Northwest Permanente, P.C., and Executive Medical Director of Kaiser Permanente Northwest. Prior to this, she served as Chief of Otolaryngology from 1987 to 1999, Vice President and Operations Medical Director for Specialty Care from 1999 to 2005, and most recently as Assistant Medical Director for Business Affairs.

Board Member and Surgical Lead

Dr. Dana Smith is a Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon at Northwest Permanente P.C. and currently directs the FACES Cleft Surgery Team for Peru.  In 2015, he traveled to Peru upon invitation to present at an International Plastic Surgery Conference, where he gained the respect of his colleagues in Peru through excellent medical research presented in excellent Spanish.

Anna Garwood collaborated with FACES Foundation while serving as the Latin America Program Manager of Green Empowerment. Of her involvement, she states, “I met the FACES team and saw not only their dedication to making profound changes for individual children, but also their commitment to broader public health. I am excited to contribute my 15 years of non-profit management and program development to the FACES board and continue to stay connected to Peru.”

Dr. Quintanilla-Dieck was born in Austin, Texas, but grew up in Monterrey, Mexico.She completed medical school at the Tec of Monterrey, then moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where she did a two-year research fellowship at the Department of Genetics of Harvard Medical School, with research focused on the genetics of non-syndromic microtia. She completed her residency in Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery and has a sub specialization in Pediatric Otolaryngology. Dr. Quintanilla is currently a Pediatric Otolaryngologist and Assistant Professor at Oregon Health Sciences University.

Dr. Joe Campbell is a retired Emergency Dept. and Family Practice physician.  He has volunteered on many disaster and other medical missions to Sri Lanka, New Orleans,, Peru, Guatemala, and South Sudan. In 1977 he and his wife Pat helped found the Oregon Wine Industry by establishing Elk Cove Vineyards in Gaston, Oregon.

Natalie Galvan is a Speech Language Pathologist who graduated from Portland State University with a master’s degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences with a Bilingual Certificate. She completed her clinical fellowship at the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center at Oregon Health and Science University and Shriners Children’s Hospital, with training in neurodevelopmental disabilities, craniofacial disorders, and alternative and augmentative communication (AAC). She has studied and worked abroad in Chile, Peru, and Ecuador. Natalie enjoys supporting culturally diverse families in the areas of social skills, speech sounds, and AAC.

Aaron Williams is a market research executive in the technology industry. He completed his MBA with emphases in Marketing and Management from the University of Washington in 2003 and went on to work for Microsoft in their Central Market Research team. Since then he as worked for various firms doing research for Fortune 500 technology companies and is currently Executive Vice President at National Research Group. Aaron speaks fluent Spanish and has lived abroad in Latin America for multiple years and traveled extensively throughout the region. He joined the FACES board in September 2022.

Tammy Berks has a Bachelors of Science in Nursing and has been practicing  for 35 years at Kaiser Permanente. During this time she has worked in pediatrics, surgery and was part of the cleft team. She is Team Lead for the nursing staff and has been travelling to Northern Peru on surgical campaigns with FACES since 2008.

Executive Director

Angela Jensen first volunteered with FACES as a medical interpreter in 2013. During college, she spent time in Latin America as an exchange student, where she grew to love the people and their culture.  Angela manages the electronic health records, the social outreach, and the international trips.

Development and Operations Manager

Rae Anne Lafrenz joined the FACES Team in June 2020. Prior to FACES, she served as Team Coordinator for the exploratory mission for Peace Brigades International in Peru. She has 20 years of experience living and working throughout Latin America in projects related to human rights, humanitarian aid, advocacy, and development.

Peru In-country Coordinator

Delia Delgado Maldonado is FACES’s Peru Patient Coordinator, working with patients, families and partners  in Peru. In addition to working with FACES, Delia is also an English teacher in Chiclayo, Peru, and has studied languages at university.
